Coffee critics? cognitive collapse

Posted Thursday November 29, 2007, 2:04 pm, Over one day old
A woman in Ohio has stopped drinking Starbucks (registration for that link may be required) because her takeout cup had a quotation on it that expressed a vague notion of possible agnosticism: Printed on the cup was: “Why in moments of crisis do we ask God for strength and help?

Holiday telescope shopping

I want to buy them a telescope. I won’t go into details, because I don’t need to; Astronomy Buff already has several good blog entries about it: Good Telescopes for Christmas, How To Buy a Telescope for Christmas, and Characteristics of a Good Beginner’s Telescope.

Texas: so, so doomed

Posted Thursday November 29, 2007, 2:04 pm, Over one day old
Comer’s e-mail implies endorsement of the speaker and implies that TEA endorses the speaker’s position on a subject on which the agency must remain neutral.” That’s right, the Texas Education Agency must remain neutral when it comes to science versus antiscience!

Face on Beauty

That is more than 20,000 times the mass of the Earth. That nickel was ejected from the explosion at many kilometers per second, and will be scattered into the gas and dust in M74, where it will get mixed in and become part of a new generation of solar systems.

Why explore space?

Posted Thursday November 29, 2007, 2:04 pm, Over one day old
That saves thousands of lives. Communication satellites allow us instant access to information all over the world using radio, television, and phones. All these questions (and thousands more) help us understand our own planet, and allow us to see how humans are affecting it.

Comet 17/P Holmes update

Posted Sunday October 28, 2007, 2:02 pm, Over one day old
You can just see in the image that the expanding debris has taken on a decidedly shell-like appearance (through the eyepiece this is really obvious). I originally thought that might have been a chunk that came off the comet, but now I think it’s just a background star.

Lame Comet Holmes video

Posted Sunday October 28, 2007, 2:02 pm, Over one day old
The cloud surrounding the nucleus is much larger (roughly the size of (but much brighter than) the nucleus of the Andromeda Galaxy, which I took a quick look at to compare), and has taken on a distinctive edge-brightened appearance, like a thick soap bubble.

The opposite of progress

Posted Saturday October 27, 2007, 2:02 pm, Over one day old
Don’t forget: we don’t set the clocks back tonight (if you live in a timezone that goes from daylight savings time to standard time). In 2005, Congress extended daylight savings time, so we don’t reset the clocks until next Sunday.
