That's good news for now, but Linden Lab desperately needs to shore up its virtual world infrastructure, from servers to staffers--demand for virtual land has outstripped its capacity to supply servers, for example (over 1,000 island orders are currently on backorder).

Linden Lab announced today that their "viewer" client software for virtual world Second Life will be released "to the open source software development community." In a Town Hall meeting conducted last December, Linden Lab's Cory Ondrejka said that an open source client would be rolled out in 2007.
