How to give a good conference talk.

Posted Thursday November 16, 2006, 1:36 pm, Over one day old
I just finished chairing a session at a conference and decided this would be a good time to share some advice about giving conference talks. The other half are people that have an interest in the area or that know little but would like to move into research in that area.

Conference Blogging

Posted Monday November 13, 2006, 1:36 pm, Over one day old
Well, as you can tell from the title. I love seeing all my friends. Some of my other friends say they get this as well, but I haven't asked my male colleagues. I mean even in person I have to pry out information from them with pliers, over the phone I rarely get more than hi.

Childrearing Makes Men (and Women?) Smarter

Posted Monday November 6, 2006, 1:35 pm, Over one day old
We learn that other tasks like laundry can be accomplished in bits and spurts in between toddler requests. As the kids get older we learn how to work on a proposal to the last possible minute before racing across town to enthusiastically cheer on the preschooler's soccer performance.

What we give up...

Posted Monday October 30, 2006, 1:36 pm, Over one day old
The instructor asked how we practice at home and I admitted that the nanny ran most practices as we don't really have time. It really is all I can do to get the kids through the monotony of get up, get dressed, eat breakfast, go to school, come home, make/buy dinner, eat, bath, books, bed.

Either the dust is settling or I'm getting used to the smoke

I appreciate all your thoughtful comments about the pre-proposal gosh I knew you'd get it because you're a woman comments. And while your proposal was as good as - or better than - those of some senior males, it was not twice as good, which would have been necessary back then.

Women in Science: Update

Posted Tuesday October 10, 2006, 1:34 pm, Over one day old
I did take some time to discuss the comments with both faculty, explaining that true equality means that you don't notice that I am a women not that you make sure to have equal representation in awards and honors, but sometimes I feel like I am yelling in the wind.

I'm not dead, just busy

Posted Monday October 9, 2006, 1:34 pm, Over one day old
They come in almost every day, work way more than a 1-2 year grad student would, and have virtually set-up the entire lab. Which is completely obvious to most graduate students, I mean when was the last time you saw a PI in the lab plugging away.

Okay, this job is really crazy

Posted Monday September 25, 2006, 1:17 pm, Over one day old
As you can probably tell from my last few posts and the space between them, I have been crazy busy. At first I thought that I over-committed, but now I am beginning to think that this is status quo for the job. I am going to need to learn to do less or get better at doing more.

Still here, sort of...

Posted Monday September 25, 2006, 1:17 pm, Over one day old
On top of all of that, my lab furniture (see previous posts) consists of five pieces, only one of which arrived correctly, and I have been negotiating for the return and replacement of the incorrect pieces (hopefully at no or low cost). So I guess you could say this week has been CRAZY!!!
