More Vaccinations, No Reactions, and Traveling Weasels

Zephyr and Ella had their distemper vaccinations yesterday, thankfully with no reactions this time. Both Ella and Zephyr were pretreated with Benadryl and they were just fine. This means that the ferrets can pretty much always get a safe play time wherever we are.

A Very Delayed Vaccination Reaction

On Wednesday my three little weasels went to the vet for their rabies vaccinations. I talked about waiting a full hour after vaccination to make sure there was no reaction. Wolfe never heard of a reaction that long after vaccination.

Hard To Believe My Mom Sent This

Ferrets' Reaction To Loss

The reaction of the other three ferrets to Nyssa's passing has been interesting. Ella and Chin Soon clearly bonded to Nyssa. She's back to her old self now. Even though she got to sniff Nyssa's body I think it didn't dawn on her that Nyssa was really dead and not going to ever wake up again.

The following are some changed and rearranged words to Ian Anderson 's song "Old Black Cat", lamenting the passing of his cat, Mauser. I don't have any songwriting ability but this piece is beautiful and with some new words I've adapted it for Nyssa. I just like the song and loved Nyssa.

Goodbye Nyssa (1998-2006)

On Monday she perked up, started eating gravy and kibble again, and seemed better, but her rear legs could still barely hold her and she kept falling over. When she did get up and eat she couldn't stand long enough to finish and kept falling over, getting up, eating a bit, and falling over again.

Chin Soon and Nyssa's Latest Vet Visit

Chin Soon and Nyssa went to the vet on Tuesday. She's lost another 139g and is under half her normal body weight at just 616g. By any standard she is an old ferret so I guess I should be grateful that she's hung around this long and maintained some quality of life.

Wolfe was going to go out and buy some raisin Bandits that night since they worked so well, keeping Nyssa distracted and happy. Wolfe's experience that melatonin often works just as well. This also means that nearly two years have passed since my former housemate brought the little monster home.

Happy Birthday, Nyssa -- She's 8!

Today is Nyssa's birthday. She is eight years old. Happy Birthday, Nyssa! In one respect I'm really happy. Nyssa's vets didn't think she'd live to see her seventh birthday and here she is at her eighth. Nyssa has surprised me by bouncing back beforeso maybe she has one more little miracle in her.
