Email Standards Project

Posted Wednesday December 12, 2007, 4:00 pm, Over one day old
The community has made great progress improving the adoption of web standards, but HTML email is having a much more difficult time having consistent standards at all. The site goes into more detail explaining why web standards matter for email and even a page on showing how you can help the cause.

Acquired Again

Posted Wednesday December 12, 2007, 4:00 pm, Over one day old
I’ll be doing a little freelancing to pay the bills, but I should have significantly more free-time for tracker development. Working a full-time job and then coming home every night to squeeze in a few hours of development wasn’t enough. Right now, I’m really not sure.

Creating a Visual Language

Posted Wednesday December 12, 2007, 4:00 pm, Over one day old
Figure 1 Amazon uses a consistent but contextually flexible visual language for reinforcing a button’s purpose. By including both the shipping speed and cost, the buttons can provide just a little more contextually relevant information while keeping the other aspects consistent.

The Hidden Interface

Posted Wednesday December 12, 2007, 4:00 pm, Over one day old
Many people falsely assume that interface design can mask any ugly complexities of the underlying business. Of course it looks nice, but can it be done? Of course, that kind of effort can get into politics and be incredibly difficult, but much of the time, it’s actually the right solution.

Beyond the Browser

Posted Wednesday December 12, 2007, 4:00 pm, Over one day old
The browser interface is the ideal input method, but it’s important to realize that many of the people potentially submitting issues would be more comfortable sending e-mails. Submitting issues via e-mail isn’t quite as rich, but it doesn’t need to be.

Noteworthy: Sock Monkeys, Google & Mice

Posted Wednesday December 12, 2007, 4:00 pm, Over one day old
Mighty Mouse Sucks Dave covered his feelings for the Mighty Mouse some time ago, but my mouse was too new for me to agree at the time. I’m also thankful that I’m usually not in a shopping mood when I do remember. Kevin, I’m doing all I can not to give you more money.

Webmaster Jam Session 2007

Posted Wednesday December 12, 2007, 4:00 pm, Over one day old
Of course, for me, part of the reason Webmaster Jam Session is such a great conference is that it’s here in Dallas. However, after attending the Jam Session, I’m reminded that’s not the case and truly encouraged about the number of great people we have here in Texas and Oklahoma.

As I mentioned, I’ll be presenting and sharing some more details about it at Webmaster Jam Session here next month, and then we’ll probably be looking at some radio silence so I can get back to developing.

Tracker Issue Tab Counts

Posted Wednesday December 12, 2007, 4:00 pm, Over one day old
Figure 2 After lightening the color and removing the bold effect, the parentheses still served their purpose without being obtrusive. I began experimenting with ways to let the count stand out, first I tried lightening and removing the bold on both the parentheses and the number.
