Wikipedia (recent) legal intern wonders why they don't "send [lawyer] after" me

Posted Tuesday December 11, 2007, 3:54 pm, Over one day old
There's also a little thing like journalistic ethics, which is why to this day I refuse to accept the Guardian as a reliable source (this article gives a little more credence to my claim, I'll note). I'm an English Wikipedia admin (sysop), and a member of the Wikimedia Communications Committee.

My _Guardian_ column on Wikipedia Scandal As Dysfunctional Cult

I didn't pick the title, but I like this one a lot :-). I feel like it's anticlimactic now, that my take will get lost as an also-ran. The reality is it's just a very old sort of social organization, one that gets people to work for free in part by pandering to their group impulses.

There Is A Wikipedia Cabal (or at least a Secret Mailing List)

Posted Tuesday December 11, 2007, 3:54 pm, Over one day old
I would have liked to write him "Jimmy, we both know what you're going to say in reply to this mailling-list topic. You're going to claim that a mailing-list hosted at your commercial venture-capital company [Wikia] is no different from a mailing-list hosted at Google Groups or Yahoo Groups.

"If you are inclined to trust Google as your source for news, Google yourself"

Posted Tuesday December 11, 2007, 3:54 pm, Over one day old
Echo: Not dead yet: the newspaper in the days of digital anarchy by Bill Keller, executive editor, New York Times. Google News and Wikipedia don't have bureaux in Baghdad, or anywhere else. They can pool reporting from hundreds of news outlets but what if there aren't hundreds of news outlets?

Debunking linkfest - Long Tail, Infringements, Comcast, etc.

A Critical Reader's Guide to The Long Tail (Tom Slee) Never confuse someone making a bit of money off you with you making a bit of money. Debunks some claims in a legal paper that's making the rounds. The problem is that if you don't come up with some sort of attention-grabber, you won't be heard.

Aftermath of Conservapedia / Homosexual page statistics prank

Posted Tuesday December 11, 2007, 3:54 pm, Over one day old
Here's the readership statistics on my debunking of the Conservapedia Homosexuality story. Looking at the [site traffic rank] spike, I'm wondering if there was any specific coverage of Conservapedia that brought all the traffic here has anyone seen or heard of anything of the like?

Conservapedia, Homosexuality, and pranked statistics

Posted Tuesday December 11, 2007, 3:54 pm, Over one day old
The "Conservapedia" Homosexuality statistics story being echoed, where the right-wing Wikipedia-style site "Conservapedia" allegedly has nine out of its top ten most popular pages being against homosexuality, cannot be correct. The site's "Most viewed pages" statistics supposedly are:

Google penalties for link-selling, and A-listers vs. Z-listers

Posted Tuesday December 11, 2007, 3:54 pm, Over one day old
While neither side of that battle cares what I have to say (and it's probably not the best idea for me to get between them), it's an interesting question - what's the difference between paying for posts, and posts with links to an A-lister blog's sponsors?
