Reality vs. Apple Computer, Inc.

Posted Thursday April 20, 2006, 7:49 am, Over one day old
However, what Apple did today has lowered my trust in them greatly. I have no idea how they sold a single laptop anytime in the last 4 years, but good job to their marketing gurus for that. edit: Ok, I had a large section here, but I deleted it thanks to a few well written emails.

Verizon Broadband Access Review

We now have the ability to do that, from anywhere, for a reasonable price. With a 1 year contract, you will be paying $80 per month (which makes no sense at all, because if you cancelled the 2 year contract after one year and paid the $175 cancellation fee, then you would still end up paying less).

Sony and DRM Rootkits

Posted Thursday April 20, 2006, 7:49 am, Over one day old
So basically, the story is that Sony actually put a rootkit on one of their CDs that installs itself when you try to play one of their music CDs on your computer (or rather, you are forced to install it before you can listen to your CD). Get your music in some other way.

Free Microsoft Development Tools

Posted Thursday April 20, 2006, 7:49 am, Over one day old
Microsoft has released ‘Express’ versions of some of their software development tools. These are somewhat more basic versions than the full tools, but still include everything you need to start programming; and yes, they can be used to make commercial products.

Even More Apple Announcements

Posted Thursday April 20, 2006, 7:49 am, Over one day old
I would actually say that $2500 for the 30″ display is a fair price, but $1300 for the 23″ is still way to high, at least when Dell has a better 24″ monitor out with more features, and it costs less than $800.

Apple iPod Video

“Whether people want to buy a device just to watch video is not clear - so far the answer’s been no. Of course if you are watching a movie on the device’s screen, then you are probably somewhere that you can’t plug it in, like a plane.

Web Hosting

Dreamhost has done a great job for me as a host and they just added a great new feature: unlimited domains (hosting, not registration). They are especially great if you are thinking about starting a blog, because they have a one-click install of WordPress.

Image Compression

Posted Thursday April 20, 2006, 7:49 am, Over one day old
If you have an image that is very complex and uses the full range of colors, like a photograph, then use jpeg. These are lossless formats but might be 100 times greater in file size than the equivalent jpeg or gif and you probably won’t notice a difference in quality.
