Smarter Auto-Linking

Posted Thursday July 3, 2008, 2:34 am, Over one day old
If your web application accepts content or input from your users, it’s nice to be able to display it in a useful format back to them. For example, some web sites auto-link or convert text presented in a URL format as a hyperlink to improve the user experience.

Color Image Scale!

Posted Tuesday July 1, 2008, 4:14 am, Over one day old
This is probably why one of my favorite design reference books for choosing a palette of colors is Color Image Scale, a book that takes color picking to a new level, distilling the emotional affect and essence of a color combination with “science”.

Silence The Echo with MacGDBp

Posted Wednesday June 25, 2008, 3:14 am, Over one day old
It’s light-weight, fairly easy-to-configure and like all of the other solutions out there, built on top of Xdebug, a foundation that provides the requisite set of features developers using heavy-weight IDEs have come to expect.

Eclipse to Textmate: An IDEological Change

Posted Thursday June 19, 2008, 7:47 am, Over one day old
For a great sheet of a lot more shortcuts, check out the Textmate manual. This is great, but since the TODO comment is so common, a lot of third party libraries use it generously throughout their code, which means your nice list has 100’s of items that you will never touch.

Oh Yeah, the Fun Part

Posted Friday June 13, 2008, 3:13 am, Over one day old
A few years ago at one of the Startup Schools run by Y Combinator, Paul Graham and Jessica Livingston invited a few of the YC alumni to come up on stage after all of the speakers were done to share some startup advice and do a Q&A with the audience of potential founders.

Google Checkout : How to Not Write Error Messages

Posted Wednesday June 11, 2008, 2:33 am, Over one day old
We plan on adding a lot more payment options to Wufoo down the road, which will help our customers and the payment processors all make money, but it’s really hard to justify adding more support for a payment processor that hurts us more than it helps.

Safari and Ajax with UTF-8 Encoding

Posted Thursday February 14, 2008, 1:34 am, Over one day old
Now, if you have come across this problem, I’m sure you have seen the solution presented by macdiggs, which seems to have fixed the problem by adding the proper encoding in the header. header("Content-type:text/html; charset=utf-8"); header("Content-Type: text/html; charset: utf-8");

Based on rules created by research done by Yahoo engineer, Steve Souders (his book High Performance Web Sites is a must read for anyone interested in front end engineering), the tool hooks into Firebug and helps you diagnose issues that can shave seconds off your pages’ load times.

Reflections of an Interface Designer

Posted Friday January 4, 2008, 1:31 am, Over one day old
Going into our 3rd year, I am amazed at the number of interface challenges Wufoo’s created for me. But Wufoo has showed me that software can have personality and feel more alive than anything else I’ve ever created. Designers, on their own, can only get you 1/3 of the way there.
