Prima la musica, poi le parole

Io la Musica son ch'à i dolci accenti Sò far tranquillo ogni turbato core, Et hor di nobil ira, et hor d'amore, Poss'infiammar le più gelate menti. -Prologo, L'Orfeo

On Don Giovanni (the good stuff)

You can always hear Rachelle, and you can always tell it's Rachelle. I've never liked Zerlina, and such a vacuous characterisation certainly doesn't help, but that's just my prejudice; objectively Amy makes a very good Zerlina and (I mean this as a compliment) a very convincing daft tart.

On Don Giovanni (everything but the singing, that is)

From the overture? which is twinned to a rapidly flashing countdown clock/light show? through the murder and Donna Elvira's entrance, right up until the appearance of Masetto and Zerlina? all that, I basically like. I'd say from Donna Elvira's "Mi tradi" to the very end.

Early notes on DG

- Pretty charmless and ugly, but not quite as vile as it might have been. It could stand to be a whole lot better, however. - If you're going to have Giovanni die from the mother of all overdoses, maybe consider establishing a serious drug habit for him beforehand.

Tales of the City III

Now, you might fundamentally object to any attempt to translate such symbols, and that's understandable; but if you're Francesca Zambello, and you've had this big idea, surely you ought to have the audacity and the creativity to integrate every part of the opera into your vision.

I loved her for the part she's played in my musical life and because she has always seemed adorable; and I've loved listening to her, but have never gone exactly mad for the voice in and of itself. To think this man was not long ago roaming the Met in a sheet as Gandhi in Satyagraha.

If my hotel hadn't had the World's Worst Wireless I might have written more while I was there, but it was all I could do just to check my email and the weather. Because even in a world where singers who can act pretty well are the rule rather than the exception, Natalie is still a cut above.

Interlude

So she has set Don Giovanni in the present day. Which is not to say modern day stagings shouldn't happen? just that this sense I'm getting from Elke, that they must happen, that they are the only way to make sense of an otherwise ridiculous and obsolete work, does not sit well with me.

So much to tell you

Posted Sunday June 29, 2008, 1:04 pm, Over one day old
There are people I've known a year or longer who I suspect might still struggle to come up with my surname; and I know from my own experience that I can take much longer than three days to learn the name of a customer only ever seen in passing.
