What I'm excited about, post-conference edition

Posted Sunday October 1, 2006, 10:44 pm, Over one day old
Wow, I've had a really busy month. Virtual servers have a bunch of advantages over physical servers: you can clone them instantly, you can migrate them between machines (while they are still running if you're using Xen) and Amazon's EC2 offers utility computing on an enormous scale.

Sticking with Opera 9

Posted Sunday October 1, 2006, 10:44 pm, Over one day old
I'm still using it, although some of the things I liked initially have faded while others have emerged. My first guess was that this used <link rel="next">, but it also works on Yahoo!, Technorati and Google search results pages which don't have those links.

LUG Radio Live and Ask Later

Posted Sunday October 1, 2006, 10:44 pm, Over one day old
I attended two grassroots technology events in the past two weeks: LUG Radio Live 2006 and London Ask Later (previously known as Techa Kucha night, name changed after some emails from the holders of the UK Pecha Kucha trademark).

Notes on JavaScript Libraries

Posted Sunday October 1, 2006, 10:44 pm, Over one day old
The big four. Libraries that promise to take the pain out of JavaScript by writing the code for you probably aren't as smart as they seem. Dan Webb has a good comparison of the big four on SitePoint, although he did overlook YUI's Animation library which I consider a highlight.

Fjax: Just say no

Posted Sunday October 1, 2006, 10:44 pm, Over one day old
Here's the catch: Fjax solves a non-existent problem. Fjax is the lightweight, cross-browser, rapid-development methodology for Ajax-style web 2.0 development that puts a Flash engine under the hood (not in the presentation layer - read on) to handle realtime XML/HTML content updating.

Two revolutionary features in Opera 9

Posted Sunday October 1, 2006, 10:44 pm, Over one day old
Wow, if I'm not careful this is going to turn in to a promotional blog for Opera. I'm not sure when other browsers forgot how to do this but it's been years since I've been able to unplug from the network and still view pages that have been saved in my cache.

EasyEclipse

Posted Sunday October 1, 2006, 10:44 pm, Over one day old
I'm delighted to hear that my rant was partially responsible for the creation of the EasyEclipse project, which not only provides easily installable packages for setting up a Java development environment but also covers LAMP development as well. Meanwhile, eclipse.org has made big improvements too.
