Staring at a strike, some productions won't sag

Posted Friday June 13, 2008, 11:47 am, Over one day old

Before Night Rises?

Posted Friday June 13, 2008, 11:47 am, Over one day old
The strange thing is that after "Lady in the Water," Night is ready for a rebound - not necessarily because this movie is fated to be great but because the critical and commercial expectations are low enough that, say, 50% on Rotten Tomatoes and $25 million this weekend will clear expectations.

A birdcage, in the modernist tradition

Also, at the Nichols event, former New York mayor Ed Koch may have found a second life as an amateur Roger Ebert, but don't expect the current holder of the hizzoner title to follow in his footsteps. "It's also the only movie I saw this year."

Reality's baby

Posted Tuesday June 10, 2008, 11:03 am, Over one day old
Kim Masters' well-timed report ahead of the movie's HBO premiere Monday night explained that the last scene of the film, in which judge Larry Fidler supposedly made a demand in 1998 that Polanski could return to the U.S. only if he appeared at a televised court appearance, isn't true.

Now if only they could combine them into one movie

Posted Tuesday June 10, 2008, 11:03 am, Over one day old
*Messing with Adam -- Despite star openings being about as au courant as a Hillary for Prez button, Adam Sandler, whose "You Don't Mess with the Zohan" earned $40 million this weekend, continues to be one of those exceptions who prove rules.

You don't mess with the guy in the goalie mask

Posted Tuesday June 10, 2008, 11:03 am, Over one day old
Sandler's is not the first unlikely company to take a step down the Clint Culpepper road. The newer entrants -- Sandler's movie could go through Overture, with whom financier Leomax has a first-look deal -- will ensure we'll be seeing a lot more of these movies for years to come.

View from a new vantage

Posted Thursday June 5, 2008, 10:33 am, Over one day old
Like many divisions, Vantage has been quiet this year at festivals. Whatever the specific form Par and Par Vantage take, it's clear that one more company has decided that dedicated marketing and distribution for specialty pics is so....2005.

Do I make you feel deja vu, baby?

Posted Tuesday June 3, 2008, 10:02 am, Over one day old
Then again, you've got to hand out at least a few daring points to the studios this summer. "Iron Man" is already the story of the summer, a character from out of nowhere dominating the box office, while "Tropic Thunder" may not be far behind as a franchise-in-waiting or at least a big grosser.

MTV Movie Awards, international show of mystery

Posted Monday June 2, 2008, 10:39 am, Over one day old
The MTV Movie Awards are a curious entity, an award show  whose main reasons for existing seems to be keep a dialogue with the MTV generation -- that is, not the generation somewhere between the Nick crowd but not the old fogey thirtysomething crowd.

For Tyson, it's all about the ear and now

Posted Monday June 2, 2008, 10:39 am, Over one day old
Tyson has always been the quintessential tragic figure who just happens to be a sports champion, which makes him a perfect subject for a documentary. And Toback has always been a man obsessed with a certain kind of fragile masculinity, which makes Tyson a perfect subject for James Toback.
