The $98 Million Ed Tech Nightmare

Posted Monday February 11, 2008, 5:27 am, Over one day old
Interesting op-ed in the Washington Post by a 30-year English teacher at an Alexandria, Va. school that just spent $98 million on renovations and technologies that none of the teachers want to use. …faculty morale is the lowest and cynicism the highest I’ve seen in years.

?Proficiency in Tossing Stuff Out?

Posted Monday February 11, 2008, 5:27 am, Over one day old
And this: The pursuit of knowledge in the age of information overload is less about a process of acquisition than about proficiency in tossing stuff out. Living in the era of information overload forces a few key questions on all readers.

?Why Would We Ever Pay for Something We Can Get For Free??

Posted Monday February 11, 2008, 5:27 am, Over one day old
The simplest way I can put it is thus: When copies are super abundant, they become worthless. When copies are super abundant, stuff which can’t be copied becomes scarce and valuable. When copies are free, you need to sell things which can not be copied.

Tale of Two Schools and Some Questions

A couple of districts that I’ve worked with in recent months provide representative examples: The first district is in a middle class suburb of a major city that serves about 6,000 students.

From Access to Information to Access to People

Posted Thursday January 31, 2008, 1:07 am, Over one day old
There are many familiar themes here, but a couple came a little clearer for me. But viewing learning as the process of joining a community of practice reverses this pattern and allows new students to engage in?learning to be? even as they are mastering the content of a field.

On ?The Twitterialization? of Blogging, Networks, Etc.

(Not that I follow that many folks already, I know.) *And since I only feel like I can follow a few people or risk “Twitter guilt” (and hours of my life) by not reading every Tweet, most of the people I follow are people I actually know and have met in person.

Local Connections and Global Connections

Posted Sunday January 27, 2008, 3:07 am, Over one day old
There are tons of schools out there that have more technology, better facilities, etc., but I think we’d all be hard pressed to find a school that has a more positive, deeply connected culture than this school. It is, I think, because of what is now possible in large measure to these tools.
