Screen readers sometimes ignore display:none

Posted Wednesday November 7, 2007, 2:54 am, Over one day old
It has been widely known for several years that using display:none in your CSS to hide content from users of graphical browsers will also hide it from people who use screen readers. However, it doesn't always work that way, as Gez Lemon explains in Screen Readers and display: none.

Can the alt attribute be omitted without hurting accessibility?

Posted Friday September 7, 2007, 2:51 am, Over one day old
I am pleased to see that the section describing the img element in the current draft does that well, except for the first example which seems a bit too long (and contains information that all users would benefit from).

Build Your Own Ruby on Rails Web Applications (Book review)

A book aimed at Ruby on Rails beginners seemed like a good place to start, so I decided to read Build Your Own Ruby on Rails Web Applications by Patrick Lenz. To each his own though. Build Your Own Ruby on Rails Web Applications Author: Patrick Lenz ISBN-10: 0975841955 ISBN-13: 978-0975841952

The W3C process may be slow, but browser vendors are slower

Posted Tuesday November 6, 2007, 2:54 am, Over one day old
But I don't think that is the main reason you can't use most of the features that have already been specified. So, next time you bang your head against a browser not supporting a CSS property that would make your life that much easier, don't put all the blame on the W3C.

Update on the Target accessibility lawsuit

Posted Monday October 8, 2007, 3:43 am, Over one day old
In March last year I posted Target sued for refusing to make their website accessible, where I talked about the USA-based retail chain being sued by the US National Federation of the Blind. Since then there has not been a lot of news about the case, at least not that I am aware of.

DOMAssistant bundle for TextMate

Posted Monday March 10, 2008, 4:00 am, Over one day old
Like many other Mac users I do most of my coding in TextMate. It has tons of really nice features, one of which is its extensibility – if you need support for a coding language that isn't included with TextMate, you can add it yourself.

Accessibility is part of your job

Posted Friday December 14, 2007, 2:55 am, Over one day old
Something frightening even, and something that is only ever taken into account (as a bolt-on after the site is finished) if a client specifically requires it. If we call ourselves professionals, we owe it to our clients, their clients, and ourselves, to do our job properly.

DOM Assistant updated to 2.5, adds CSS selector support

Posted Wednesday December 19, 2007, 2:56 am, Over one day old
It's been just three months since Robert released version 2.0 of his library, but since then he has been working hard on improving DOM Assistant even more. For a few months I've been using DOM Assistant 2.0 almost daily, and I have been happy with what it does.

First impressions of Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1

Posted Saturday March 8, 2008, 2:59 am, Over one day old
I realise I may be coming across as being a bit negative here, but I was really hoping for more after Microsoft's surprising move to let IE 8 use its most compliant standards mode by default. Beta 2 is sure to deliver much more than Beta 1, and I'm looking forward to it.
