Late 2007 Web conference and event roundup

Posted Thursday August 30, 2007, 5:52 am, Over one day old
Well, there are a number of other Web related conferences and events coming up in the next few months, in different parts of the world, with different speakers and programs. There are probably several other conferences, workshops and other events taking place that I don't know about.

The Greenpeace Green my Apple campaign

Posted Friday September 28, 2007, 2:51 am, Over one day old
When Greenpeace launched their Green my Apple campaign site a year ago I had a hard time keeping my mouth shut, but I think I managed reasonably well. But after Veerle told me that Greenpeace would take full responsibility if anything like that should happen I jumped on board.

Choose an accessible image replacement method

Posted Tuesday December 4, 2007, 2:55 am, Over one day old
Another drawback they have in common is that they don't work well with partially transparent images, so if you have to use transparency you'll need to decide whether to adjust the design or hide the replaced text from people with images off.

Specify a maximum width for em-based layouts

Posted Tuesday March 4, 2008, 3:00 am, Over one day old
One technique that can easily make reading a site a lot more uncomfortable is using an elastic, or em-based, layout such as the one I use here (and talk about a bit more in detail in Fixed or fluid width?

Provide an accessible alternative if you must use a CAPTCHA

Posted Tuesday September 4, 2007, 2:50 am, Over one day old
Using alternative text, which is the normal method for making images accessible to people who can't see them, for CAPTCHA images is basically the same as removing any protection against spammers, so that obviously does not work. Audio should obviously not be used as the only option either.

Mobile Web Design (Book review)

Posted Thursday September 6, 2007, 2:51 am, Over one day old
The number of mobile phone users that can access the Web from their phones is increasing quickly, as is the number of people who actually do use their phones to access the Web. Cameron has had the mobile Web on his mind for a long time.

Simply JavaScript (Book review)

Posted Friday January 18, 2008, 2:56 am, Over one day old
The authors, Kevin Yank and Cameron Adams, get off to a great start by explaining the three layers the Web is built on (presentation, content, and behaviour) and how CSS, HTML, and JavaScript should be used for each separate layer.

Doctype switching for IE 8

Posted Tuesday February 26, 2008, 2:59 am, Over one day old
If the switch was reversed, i.e. you'd have to insert the meta element if you wanted IE 7 rendering, it would make a lot more sense to me. I believe that many of the people who argue against the version targeting switch would say "Yeah, that seems like a good idea, let's do that."

Helping others understand web accessibility

Posted Tuesday February 5, 2008, 2:58 am, Over one day old
When I hold workshops for people who want to learn more about web standards and accessibility, I often notice that the attendants really have tried to improve their accessibility knowledge. And it doesn't look like things will get much easier when WCAG 2.0 is released and becomes the norm.
