Marketing? Me? I spend a good deal of time railing against marketing and consumerism, but I am by profession a marketing ...erm... professional. People are individuals, not 'targets'; they are producers, not consumers; and 'we' (being marketers) are 'they' and 'we' should never forget that. I call my technique Pinko Marketing - Commons-Based Unmarketing.

Where we already don't need the browser

One commenter asked about Amazon...why not have a desktop app that learns your tastes and can perform a search that does a price comparison across the web? You define what you let 'out there', but you always benefit because you are recording your own data.

R.I.P. Browsers

Posted Wednesday July 26, 2006, 9:07 am, Over one day old
Have your browser crash recently? There are more and more perfectly good desktop apps that should just be made networkable (connectable, viewable and sharable) virtually instead of moving the apps into a browser base. eMail already runs that way and so do many of our calendars.

It's not an Us vs Them

Posted Sunday July 23, 2006, 9:30 am, Over one day old
Big powerful web company believes they have the smartest people around (hires anyone that "really matters"), so why listen to outside developers? It's true that if any marketer has to say, "ask the engineer over there" that marketer has failed (although there are some uber-geeky exceptions).

Markets are...

There are people who need stuff and there are more people who provide/create/etc. stuff, who are also people who need stuff. So, in essence, there are really only people and sometimes we need stuff and sometimes we sell stuff.

The 'I love my web apps' meme

Posted Thursday July 20, 2006, 9:14 am, Over one day old
Greg at Cistera challenges me to a useful new meme : naming my favourite apps. I'm not usually a fan of passing along memes, but I am a big fan of many of these tools, so I will definitely bite...but put them into various categories: BLOGGING Technorati - for tracking, nothing is better.

Pandora and my Continued Adoration...

Posted Thursday July 20, 2006, 9:14 am, Over one day old
A group of people, dedicated to the Music Genome Project, spend years at their labor of love - not making money (Tim said, "Being a musician was my 'stable job'."), getting evicted, scraping a company together to keep the dream alive. They've done one thing really well - music discovery.

Not to be mean or anything, but stuff like this drives me batty. I'd love the top 10 reasons for everyone in the comments what is wrong with this agency.

Smart

I would find out that the best deal on tube socks is at Target because my neighbour, who I actually have time to socialize with was just down there...and I would have time to go (consequently, all of our socks have holes in them).

They didn't try to garner sympathy...they used a little humour to lighten the impact of a very real outage...and people totally loved it. :: speaking of Canadian Bacon, there is this funny new Canadian humour site, eh?
