FISA, Obama, and the Internet People

Posted Thursday July 10, 2008, 3:56 am, Over one day old
They may not have seen or signed the Care2 Petition or the Night of Facebook Action or the Facebook group or the Get FISA Right website, but they'd heard about the rumblings even though the media coverage has been downright lousy.

Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Online Videos

Posted Monday July 7, 2008, 1:04 am, Over one day old
Anyone can sue you for violating their copyright and you can declare fair use, but you will still have to pay onerous legal bills to defend that claim. This means that more people get to see such creativity, but it also means that the copyright owners tend to get more outraged.

Andy van Dam dancing the cha-cha

Posted Monday June 30, 2008, 1:04 am, Over one day old
I was one of his TAs and absolutely loved seeing him do goofy things in class. But there has to be more embarrassing footage... Many of these had to have been videotaped. Who has these videos? Calling all Brown CS alumni... please upload any embarrassing footage that you have, pretty please?

feeding quasi-"legitimate" trolls in an attention economy

Posted Sunday June 22, 2008, 1:03 am, Over one day old
Still, trying to convince everyone out there to ignore a troll isn't easy and being silent ain't all it's cracked up to be. Why does it seem as though more people are starting to write controversial books purely to make money off of the attention they receive when others attack them?

markers of status: different, and yet the same

Posted Wednesday June 18, 2008, 1:03 am, Over one day old
For most teens, the status that matters is that which is conferred in everyday life. I think that we'll continue to see fantastic examples of individuals achieving status through their networked participation, but I don't think that this will ever become mainstream.

politics of terrorism studies

Posted Sunday June 1, 2008, 1:03 am, Over one day old
I don't expect in-depth coverage, but I still enjoy seeing how certain things are being framed. I can certainly make my guesses, but as I spend more time analyzing quantitative studies, I'm really curious to know more about the politics behind controversial quantitative studies.

from blog to comic

Posted Friday May 30, 2008, 1:02 am, Over one day old
Last fall, I wrote an entry called my long lost handwriting. Much to my delight, Greg Williams turned that post into a comic for Blogjam which appears in the Tampa Tribune tomorrow. Here's the digital version. ::giggle::

this ain't about sexism

Posted Saturday May 24, 2008, 1:02 am, Over one day old
Lately, I've just been downright angry. I've always appreciated the second wave feminists for what they did for women in the 1970s, but I identify as a third-waver because I think that it is irresponsible of feminists to seek power for rich, straight, white women at the expense of other women.

update: the sorta graduation

Posted Thursday May 22, 2008, 1:02 am, Over one day old
For months, I've been locked indoors trying to get enough of my dissertation finished so that I could walk in graduation. Having the opportunity to do some sustained thinking, get regular advice, and try to actually take my thinking to the next level has been a joyous thing.
