Customer Service. Duh.

Posted Tuesday July 1, 2008, 9:48 am, Over one day old
Because this flux of work streams directly to my team, it is my responsibility to manage that flow — diverting projects to the right people, making sure things are reviewed (and approved), and pushing back when we do not have capacity. Practice good customer service.

Why I Use and Love Photoshop for Mockups

Posted Monday June 9, 2008, 11:40 am, Over one day old
Jason describes in some detail the fact his company skips the Photoshop mockup stage, going “right from a quick paper sketch to HTML /CSS.” What is not 100% clear to me is whether he is discussing internal projects, or contract work for clients.

Branding the TXP Admin Interface for Clients

Posted Wednesday May 21, 2008, 11:32 am, Over one day old
When clients first open the administrative interface, they get it. If you are still in the paleolithic age of browsing and your antinqueware does not support transparent PNG s, save as a GIF or JPG and make sure the logo’s background matches the color you choose for top band of color.

I Guess It's Selling OK Then

Posted Thursday May 8, 2008, 7:38 am, Over one day old
This is going to be a shameless post, but I do not care. I swear I’m not just saying this, but it is a really good book — thick, informative, illustrative and even funny (seriously!) in some parts.

You Can Lead Them to Water

THEM : “I talked to my wife and my friend and this guy I used to work with and looked at some of the drawings my son did for the website design, and I really would like the headline in neon green and set in the typefontface Comic Sans.

99designs: Bullshit 2.0

Posted Sunday April 6, 2008, 12:00 pm, Over one day old
99designs works by essentially soliciting spec work from its registered designers. Those “savvy clients” just got a shitty design, the winner got some shitty pittance for their effort, and all of the other shitty designers got jack shit for their shitty work.

The Pain of Evaluating WCM Software

Posted Wednesday March 26, 2008, 8:29 am, Over one day old
Recently, my company decided to drag its old-school means of managing content into the modern age by evaluating and purchasing a proper web content management system (also known as WCM if you are an analyst). This is not a bad decision. These WCM vendors clearly have products that work.

Meeting Face to Face With Clients

Posted Wednesday February 20, 2008, 10:41 am, Over one day old
A lunch meeting, or a visit to their office, allows me to chitchat some small talk, ask more questions about their business (not to mention see their business), and really get a gut feel for the client before signing any contract.

Web Design for ROI

Posted Monday February 18, 2008, 8:57 am, Over one day old
In my profession(s) as a creative director and freelance web designer, one of the things I have learned about the Web over the years — which people much smarter than me have evidently known for a long time — is that good design shows its true value only after metrics are applied.

Referral From a Lost Opportunity

Posted Monday February 18, 2008, 8:57 am, Over one day old
It turns out that a new client I met with just this week was referred to me by a person for whose website project I bid on but ultimately lost to a competitor. Two years ago, a commercial real estate developer contacted me to provide an estimate on a website redesign.
