Posted Saturday March 15, 2008, 3:35 am, Over one day old
The pharmaceutical companies claim that their advertisements provide important educational value to patients. “They can learn about diseases they might have!” the companies say. Their goal is to make more money, by selling more pills.

Health Care?s Broke: Shift Work

Posted Friday March 14, 2008, 3:35 am, Over one day old
Even before the 80-hour work week, shift work was part of a physician’s and resident’s training. Maybe it means that we have some computer system that somehow collects important information about the patient and puts together a summary based on the electronic medical record.

KevinMD on USA Today?s Op-Ed

Posted Thursday March 13, 2008, 3:35 am, Over one day old
About the shortage of primary care, which I’ll be discussing — and with similar recommendations to Kevin — later in my series. Way to go Kevin. Another point we can agree upon. (Kevin is right; as a medical student, we can see the writing on the wall and do the basic math.)

Health Care?s Broke: Physician Rating and Quality Indicators

Posted Thursday March 13, 2008, 3:35 am, Over one day old
(Look, I’m well aware that the indicators aren’t always practical or the best, and they certainly need to be improved drastically, taking into account the differences between community and academic medical centers, etc, but the evaluations and ratings are coming.

Health Care?s Broke: Malpractice

Posted Wednesday March 12, 2008, 3:35 am, Over one day old
This report also suggests that in many of the “problem states” with high malpractice costs, doctors are either leaving the state or leaving a particular practice because of costs, leaving both Emergency and Newborn care at risk.

Bob Wachter on Medical Futility

Posted Tuesday March 11, 2008, 3:35 am, Over one day old
A really, super fantastic post on ethics, rationing, medical resources, and futility by UCSF’s hospitalist blogger. Illustrates my feelings on the subject very well and shows that we really need a solution.

Health Care?s Broke: EMTALA and Inappropriate Care

Posted Tuesday March 11, 2008, 3:35 am, Over one day old
They’re usually just as well-placed and located as hospitals, they provide more appropriate care settings at much lower costs, and they would also get a patient tied in for follow-up at the clinic, maybe even start seeing a physician on a regular basis.
