Mike B: The Invisible Man

Posted Thursday November 29, 2007, 1:45 pm, Over one day old
The closest subway is the F train to York - right out of the subway, left on Plymouth, 5 minute walk Alternatively, A or C to High St, straight down High St, right on Front, left on Adams. Adams dead-ends under the bridge at Plymouth, and the loft is on that corner. 8 min walk.

Stateless

Truth is, I slept on this record for a while, not fully convinced of its merits — even though both Roots Manuva and DJ Shadow were singing its high praise. RIYL: Jeff Buckley, DJ Shadow, 65DaysofStatic, South, Radiohead, UNKLE, Cinematic Orchestra READ: http://www.statelessonline.co.uk/

Statehood

Posted Thursday November 29, 2007, 1:45 pm, Over one day old
This is the first of two posts of bands with the word “State” in their names. First off, is Washington D.C’s Statehood, the newest project from former-Dismemberment Plan rhythm section Joe Easley and Eric Axelson, Vehicle Birth’s Leigh Thompson and vocalist Clark Sabine.

SK Exclusive: See-I & Magic Fly

It’s hard to be objective about your friend’s record label, especially since you help spread the word as an affiliated DJ, but “The King” as remixed by recent Bastard Jazz find The Magic Fly is one of those impossible-to-resist midtempo UK-style singles.

Sample Party: Breakwater vs. Daftpunk

Posted Saturday October 27, 2007, 1:43 pm, Over one day old
Turns out that one of the few truly monstrous tracks from Daft Punk’s latest, Human After All, almost completely jacks the opening of “Release the Beast,” a little known electro-funk stomper by 2-and-out late 70s jazz-funk outfit Breakwater.

Grey Reverend

As far as live bands are concerned, The Cinematic Orchestra have few equals. However, this post is not about The Cinematic Orchestra, but focused on their much lesser known opening act, Grey Reverend, the pseudonym of solo acoustic guitarist and singer/songwriter L.D. Brown.

But to their credit, they manage a handful of scorchers and prove that experience trumps trendiness, especially when they tackle a sound and the result — as in the case of “Bust” — is more successful than 99% of the artists aping it.
