Ruth Brown - Honey Boy (Atlantic 2075)

Posted Saturday November 18, 2006, 1:20 pm, Over one day old
Within a year, she had broken the 'race record' market wide open with her smash hit Teardrops From My Eyes, which would spend an unprecedented 25 weeks on the R&B charts (including 11 weeks at number one!), and give the fledgling label it's first taste of national success.

He put them right back out there to record what would become the third track cut for the album, the great Save Me, which had been written by King Curtis, Aretha and her younger sister Carolyn. I Never Loved A Man (The Way That I Love You) had become everything Wexler wanted it to be, and more.

Willie Hightower - You Used Me Baby (Fame 1465)

By the time they got back, Steal Away was a bona-fide hit, and Lowery was able to work out a national distribution deal with Chicago's Vee-Jay Records (who would bring Joe Simon down there to record his #13 hit Let's Do It Over the following year).

Annette Snell - Footprints On My Mind (Dial 1023)

His Dial label would go on to produce some of the great hidden gems of Southern Soul. Killen would produce some of his best records on Paul, not only for Dial, but for Warner Brothers in the early seventies as well. It doesn't get much better than this, soul fans, let me tell ya!

Ted Taylor - Going In The Hole (Ronn 65)

Posted Monday October 23, 2006, 1:12 pm, Over one day old
After I posted a Clarence Fountain tune on Jewel Records over at holy ghost on October 11th, I noticed that my compadre Dan Phillips offered up a Bobby Patterson side on Paula just three days later (great minds thinking alike, and all of that).

Slim Harpo - I'm Gonna Miss You (Like The Devil) (Excello 2273)

Posted Monday October 16, 2006, 1:18 pm, Over one day old
Lightnin's first few Excello singles sold very well in the South, and Miller's studio soon became ground zero for 'swamp-blues', producing some of the greatest records ever. Lightnin' used him as his harmonica player on gigs around town, and brought him down to Miller's studio in Crowley.

Joe Tex - You Better Believe It Baby (Dial 4033)

When Hold What You've Got was released in January of 1965, it just took off, selling over 200,000 copies the first week and spending 2 months on the charts, where it climbed as high as #5 pop and #2 R&B (only kept from the #1 position by the Temptations' My Girl).

Joe Simon - Come On And Get It (Sound Stage 7 2628)

Posted Friday September 29, 2006, 1:17 pm, Over one day old
Foster, in a stroke of brilliance, turned to the one man in Nashville that had his finger on the pulse of black music, John R. He gave him 'complete control' of A&R for the label, and free reign in the studio, with production on all Sound Stage 7 releases being handled by J.R. Enterprises.
