The Other American Idols

Posted Thursday March 13, 2008, 10:43 am, Over one day old
My wife's in the other room watching American Idol, and while I'm amazed it's been going so long, you gotta admire its emphasis on quality and professionalism. Technorati Tags: software, mindola, tim story, music sharing, american idol, web 2.0

Backed Up? Or Cracked Up?

If you give your username and password to third parties, i.e., those who access your account on your behalf, you need to be more rather than less careful than with the original service. Think hard before you give your email password to any service, however legitimate.

My Technology-free Lunch

Posted Sunday March 9, 2008, 2:28 pm, Over one day old
At lunch today, it took me some time to realise what was different. Maybe my companions weren't even carrying cellphones. A recent survey in the UK highlights how mad we've become: Our liking for modern technology may be disrupting our sleep - and even our relationships, claims a UK survey.

Babylon? Oh So 1999

Posted Tuesday March 4, 2008, 12:49 pm, Over one day old
I used to think that small programs that sat in your computer's memory and could be accessed quickly by a keystroke were the future, but nowadays I'm not sure that's true. At least, they've got to be real careful. If they're not, they end up looking and behaving dangerously like adware.

Fake Photos-A Thing of the Past?

Posted Wednesday February 27, 2008, 10:28 am, Over one day old
And this, of course, is not the first time photos have been doctored by news organisations that should know better (there's Reutersgate, as it's sometimes called, when Lebanese freelance photographer Adnan Hajj was caught allegedly duplicating flares, buildings and plumes of smoke for Reuters.

The New Newswire: a Dutch Student Called Michael

Posted Wednesday February 27, 2008, 10:28 am, Over one day old
In this case it could have been finding a way to reflect in the headlines the unusual nature of this event; Traditional media has to both monitor these new sources of news?the tweets from ordinary folk surprised to be shaken awake by a tremor?and work with them to ensure that they, too, benefit.

Beyond Information Delivery

Posted Monday February 25, 2008, 10:49 am, Over one day old
I?d love to see, for example, a five-digit code at the end of each news story in my newspaper/magazine that I could key into my phone and which would then store a copy of that story on my desktop.

SMS, Toilets, Bike Theft and Cars

I was suggesting some fancy service or other that involved a small app sitting on the phone. The Webasto Thermo Top E Parking Heater allows users to send a text message to a car where it is installed, which then kicks it into action, ensuring your car is warm to the touch when you get in.

Breaking Out of Those Silos

Posted Tuesday February 19, 2008, 1:28 pm, Over one day old
If you're looking for the future of news, a pretty good example of it is at UK startup silobreaker, which isn't a farm demolition service but a pretty cool news aggregation and visualization site. In other words, it lets you look at news in different ways.
