Martian Headsets

But IE 6 and IE 7 didn?t really conform to the specs, so these sites have little hacks in them that say,?on Internet Explorer? move this thing 17 pixels to the right to compensate for IE?s bug.?

" In the past, it was presumed that pages were loosely-standard and browsers, also loosely-standard, made a kind of best effort to present the page. The consequences have been explained marvelously in Joel Spolski's post on Martian Headsets. We are similarly relying on document-format standards as a way to provide for many-to-many interchange and interoperability between different (implementations of versions of) document-format standards and different (implementations of versions of)"

"the price of changing over to "be strict in what is accepted and be standard in what is done with it." This is a very disruptive change. We'll see how well it works. Joe Gregorio argues that exceptions to Postel's Law are appropriate. Some, like Joel Spolski [no compatibility view], think it might be a little too late. There are already some who claim that the IE 8.0 Compatibility view is a sin against standardization [compatibility view offered], no matter that not many of the 8 billion and climbing"

"Compatibility View concept just makes me cringe. This concept basically lets you view the current site as if your browser were IE 7. Apparently the IE 8 team made a choice that would effectively break some sites, Joel Spolsky goes into some great details about the issue (somewhat verbose but very important for web developers). I do like the the InPrivate browsing, the idea of not having to necessarily delete my cookies and offline content after purchasing and browsing the web is appealing. Key loggers aside this"

"ve got nothing to read. A glowing endorsement I know, but I?m almost always pleased when I go there. He tends to focus on math and physics, which is cool, but he sometimes gets a little too excited about numbers. Then there?s Joel on Software. An amazingly excellent post got my attention one day, and it similarly went in my pile of things to look at when things are slow. He doesn?t post often, but when he does, it?s likely to be pretty good. "

Pop in some things i read at Joel?s blog - Martian Headsets. Voila!!! all agree that its not a bug? :). I?m happy, they are happy ? Here is my simple explanation : Its all with the implementation difference of the two browsers. In US you drive on the right side of the road. Hence all cars are"

"the theme to a Tango based theme, but still the default GUI is nice! However, after using it for several weeks I have to revert back to using Firefox. It?s not because of web standards, but it?s because they don?t mean a lot in real life, sadly. It seems Joel was right (1), and the most important thing is how they are implemented - which means once more you need to test your site on all browsers available, and testing the syntax against the W3C test application is not enough."

A resource every software developer should read. But his latest is simply outstanding. In Martian Headsets, he explains about web standards in a way that's understandable, exact, balanced, and above all, entertaining. Lays out the reason why IE8, the next version of the predominant web browser in the world, is in a unique position to change the world (and"
