It is used for remote control of Windows Internet Sharing, punching holes in UPNP -enabled firewalls ( MSN and most Bittorrent clients use it for precisely that purpose), etc., but most recently for configuration and media sharing among entertainment devices under DLNA.

After being tipped off by one of our readers, we were able to confirm with our sources that Adobe has bought out this tiny company, which can help Adobe achieve its VoIP and P2P ambitions. In addition, Adobe recently announced a partnership with VeriSign, which is now in the CDN business.

All that being said, I think a fair approach for Microsoft is to show a "Welcome to IE7" page on first run that has a small section saying "Your start page is set to www.msn.com (click here to change)" and "Your default search engine is set to MSN Search (click here to change)".
