Supporting Authentication Discovery in a Standard Way

I'm sitting in a session at Internet Identity Workshop that is discussing what standardized support browsers could provide to all authentication systems. Right now all browsers support one: Username/Password over HTTP Authentication.

One, I know the CEO (they're in Portland), and two, they support optionally using CardSpace to authenticate yourself (as well as the standard way with password). In this case, I used the dotnetopenid ASP.NET Controls, which were about as easy as falling off a log.

Case in point is single sign on, which could be achieved today using OpenID but probably won’t because too many of these services have business models that rely on capturing user data.
