What people don't get - especially non-PR people - is that, oh, the majority of PR is done at the local level, where people don't care about blogs or RSS. And, don't get me started on what a targeted press release distribution could have done for the Bloghaus.

Not all the commentary was critical, but clearly some of the criticisms were spurred by antipathy toward the firm itself, rather than any real issue with what they announced. When a "big name" screws up, whether Edelman or any other, by all means call them on it.

Of course there's the BIG BLOGOSPHERE NEWS: Robert Scoble is leaving Microsoft to join start-up Podtech. Not at all surprising that he'd want to try his hand at a start-up venture -- take the risk, build something new. Crappy content in a new form does NOT equal a good press release.

Some bloggers got their knickers in a twist about the proposed format, dumping on the SHIFT guys for a stupid idea and labelling the PR bloggers who gave them props for trying something new pretty much as idiots. It was a good effort to incorporate new media tools into a press release format.

Today Todd Defren and the Shift team announced their social media press release format. - I still wish we weren 't so focused on the press release... in whatever form... and instead worried more about news value.Worthless announcements will still be worthless, even in a new format.

PR can provide the full picture - by being a new aggregators - but we should give the journalists the courtesy and freedom to use whatever information they find most valuable and then add their own perspective. But it would have to be the right story, for the right client and at the right time.
