The company has such a monopoly on every service that it simply becomes the world government, with a “World CEO” in charge of all humanity. Thousands of WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) units were left behind to convert the garbage into a disposable form.

Phil Barker points us to VUE 2, a new edition of the Visual Understanding Environment from Tufts University. While I haven't used VUE, the fact that it has interfaces with fedora, Flickr, JSTOR and Wikipedia caught my eye.

Britannica tweaks the wiki

You can see the beta of the new site here. They slow things down and reduce the ability to scale, but Wikipedia’s process makes it possible to read an article that’s been altered, if only for a minutes, by some devilish hand.

Mark Bauerlein has a terrific piece in The Chronicle of Higher Ed that compares the flat style of Wikipedia to that of other encyclopedias. But, there is a complicating factor: The section of the Wikipedia entry Mark cites is the first paragraph of the article.

I used to think that small programs that sat in your computer's memory and could be accessed quickly by a keystroke were the future, but nowadays I'm not sure that's true. At least, they've got to be real careful. If they're not, they end up looking and behaving dangerously like adware.
